Loading... Please wait...Up until the mid 1970s rootballing was the only way of buying large established shrubs from a nursery.
As container or pot growing became more popular rootballed plants took a back seat but were still grown in large numbers. The majority of rootballed plants ended up in containers for re-sale in garden centres and retail nurseries.
As more awareness develops in terms of our responsibilities to the environment the majority of us now 'seek out' more sustainable and friendly ways to stock our lives. We look for reduced chemical usage in our food production, cleaner more effecient cars to travel in, more effecient ways of heating & lighting our homes, we are becoming more aware.
The plants are raised from cuttings which root in cold frames on the nursery. They are then transplanted into the fields to grow on to large plants. Apart from a bit of trimming, weeding by cultivation and feeding thats all we do to them.
We lift the plants using machinery and wrap the roots in hessian sacks. These hessian sacks remain on the plant during transportation to you and also remain during and after planting. The hessian sacks will rot away in the ground leaving you with no waste. In fact the only reminder you will have of the plants is the plant itself.
Example of a rootballed laurel & close up of rootball just been lifted (Taxus baccata 60-90cm). Also close up of a rootball with the hessian sack/bag, this stays on when planting and will rot away in a few weeks.
Rootballs are 'greener' because they require no compost, no plastic pot, reduced use of fertilizer, weedkiller and pesticide and none or very little extra water other than what falls out of the sky!
A natural plant, grown in a natural way, delivered to your door in tip top condition.
